Transport

  • How to get from the airport to the city centre?

Sofia Airport is conveniently close to the city centre. You can reach the city centre by:

Public transport:

TicketBus, trolley bus and tram tickets can be purchased for 1.60 leva (€ 0.80) at the newspaper kiosks at the airport terminals or from the bus driver and the ticket vending machine just behind the driver’s cabin. If you buy (only in cash) a ticket from the bus driver or the newspaper kiosks you should perforate it in a perforating device after boarding the vehicle. The ticket is only valid while travelling with the vehicle in which you perforated it. The ticket vending machines for metro tickets (1.60 leva) are located at the metro stations. The ticket machines accept BulgarianTicket 2 banknotes and coins. Daily, weekly and monthly travel cards as well as a set of 10 tickets (“taloni”, 12 leva or € 6, valid only for one person) can be purchased from the ticket kiosks. The fine for traveling without a ticket is 40 leva (€ 20.00). The public transport lines operate between 5.30 am and 11.00 pm. For further details on the routes, timetables, and tariffs of the public transport, please refer to Metropolitan Sofia and Sofia Urban Mobility Centre.

Metro Line 1 connects Sofia Airport to the city centre (stations “Sofia University “Sveti Kliment Ohridski” or “Serdika”). The metro station at Sofia Airport is located in the eastern part of Terminal 2. You can reach it by following the floor marking in blue in the public area of Terminal 2. Sometimes, Sofia Airport provides free-of-charge transportation between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at every 30 minutes between 07:00 and 19:00 local time, with no intermediate stops. The shuttle bus stops are located in front of the terminals and are marked by signage and pavement marking.

Website of Sofia Metro: http://www.metrosofia.com/en/

Bus No. 84 and Bus No. 184 also connect the two terminals (Terminal 1 and Terminal 2) to the city centre (bus stop “Sofia University “Sveti Kliment Ohridski”). The bus stops are located close to/in front of the exits of the Arrivals Hall.

For more information on the public transport in Sofia visit the website of Sofia Urban Mobility Centre: https://www.sofiatraffic.bg/en/

Taxi:

All official taxis are yellow (only one company has green cars), have fares per kilometre displayed on the window, and have visible taxi signs (in English or Bulgarian) on top. The standard legal fare is 0.79 lv per minute during the day and 0.90 lv per minute at night.

If you prefer to take taxi from and to Sofia Airport we recommend the taxi company with which the airport has a contract: OK Supertrans (О‘Кей Супертранс), tel. +359 2 973 21 21; https://www.oktaxi.net/index_en.php. You can request the taxi service at the office of OK Supertrans in the Arrivals Hall. The price from the airport to the centre of the city should be less than 20 BGN (10 ЕUR). In order to avoid the risk of abuse, we recommend that you do not use taxi services offered by other taxi companies in front of the terminal.

Other taxi companies you can use:

Yellow Taxi: +359 2 91119; https://www.yellow333.com/en/

Radio SV Taxi (Радио СВ Такси): +359 2 91263; https://91263.bg/?p=101&l=2

Green Taxi (Грийн Такси): +359 2 810810; +359 878 810 810; http://greentaxi.bg/joomla/index.php/en/

Never accept a lift by a private, unlicensed vehicle. To avoid being scammed by the taxi drivers, please take a look at this article.

Currency and Credit Cards

When you arrive at Sofia Airport Terminal 1 or 2, do not hurry to exchange money before you pass the border control. The exchange office there is buying foreign currencies at a lot lower price than you can get in the banks outside, in the lobby (UBB/OBB  – Terminal 1 and Terminal 2; Eurobank – Terminal 1; DSK bank – Terminal 1). If you arrive during the night when the bank office is closed, we recommend exchanging just 10 – 20 euro which should be enough to get to your hotel. You can also use ATM’s. Cash is available from the cash dispensers installed in the public area of the Arrivals and Departures halls at both terminals. The Bulgarian national currency unit is called LEV (LEVA in plural) and has the international currency code BGN. The coin is called STOTINKA (STOTINKI in plural). The fixed exchanged rate of 1 EUR is 1.95583 BGN. You can find current currency information on the site of the Bulgarian National Bank: www.bnb.bg.

Generally, in most hotels, restaurants and shops the commonly accepted credit cards are Visa, Visa Electron, Master Card, and Maestro. Usually, restaurants and shops have signs indicating the type of credit cards they accept. In public transport and taxies you can pay only in cash.
